The U.S. government tries to relocate the Chiricahua Apache to the Gila River Indian reservation (the San Carlos Agency), but Geronimo and his band refuse. For the next 10 years, Geronimo leads raiding parties throughout Arizona, New Mexico, and parts of Mexico. He surrenders in 1887 under terms that are not honored (Nies, 1996).
